The 3rd ARTguro Biennial: Sining, Dunong, Liwanag
Exhibition Notes by Rissa Lucero
ARTguro finds its home in Fundacion Sansó for its third biennial, themed “Sining, Dunong, Liwanag” in honor of the Filipino art teacher that nurtures, teaches, and cultivates the love of art for their students towards a brighter future for the country. Aligned with Fundacion Sansó’s vision to support and celebrate our country’s cultural and artistic heritage by providing meaningful public workshops and scholarships that motivate and strengthen student learning, the biennial highlights the artistic talent of our educators from all over the country in time for National Teachers’ Month with its exhibition, workshops, and talks that offers a diverse range of creativity from its teacher volunteers. More than 40 art educators participating in this exhibition showcase their medley of artistic mediums, their experiences, passions, woes, hopes, and dreams for the Filipino youth inside and outside of the classroom.
The ARTguro Biennial was first established in 2021 during the height of the covid-19 pandemic in order to inspire art educators despite their hardship and challenges. The exhibition featured art teachers from all over the Philippines and has since grown into a regular biennial attracting educators from all sectors and backgrounds to celebrate their passion for teaching and the arts. The biennial has featured over 100 art teachers and artist educators from different parts of the country throughout the years.
The biennial seeks to celebrate each and every Filipino teacher who strives to better the future of their students. The call to preserve and strengthen the arts and humanities is even stronger as the current landscape of Philippine education continues to change. We strive to celebrate and integrate meaningfully into our curricula the richness of our country’s art and culture as a means for progress. In this exhibition, ARTguro reiterates the importance of the art teacher as an indispensable and passionate member of the education system: putting into the forefront these extraordinary people who work tirelessly for their students, who shape minds for the future of the Philippines, and who inspire future educators to take on the mantle for the arts. ARTguro is a community of artists, educators, mentors, and teachers who engage, empower, and inspire each other in fostering creativity inside and outside of the classroom. We facilitate exhibitions, podcasts, workshops, and more to connect teachers to the networks they may need to better engage the love of art and culture for their students because positive change happens through authentic, arts-driven, and culturally contextual education. Since its conception, ARTguro has partnered with public and private institutions in providing scholarships for aspiring art educators and funding for continuing professional development. This unique platform allows teachers to help fellow teachers in bettering the state of education in the Philippines through the arts.
